C6 THE HARTFORD COURANT: Saturday, Novtmbw 2, 1996 5 HAM boys, Rocky Hill girls are COC champions By JERRY TRECKER Courant Staff Writer EAST HAMPTON The RHAM-Hebron boys and Rocky Hill girls took COC soccer titles Friday with vividly contrasting victories in a doubleheader at East Hampton Middle School. RHAM built a two-goal lead, weathered a great Rocky Hill comeback, then stormed back to complete a 5-2 victory in the second game. Rocky Hill took control early in the girls title game and finished with a 3-0 victory over Coventry. "There was no RHAM letdown, just a great Rocky Hill comeback to make it a great game for the fans and a tough one for coaches," RHAM coach Mike Zotta said. "To our credit, we responded when they came back at us as I knew they would.

This is a great rivalry. It would be wonderful if we could meet again in the Class Ml final." That's possible because the teams are in different brackets. The boys title game was wide open and fast-paced. RHAM controlled much of the first half and led on goals by Matt Noonan and Kenny Romanchuck, but Rocky Hill adjusted at intermission. Coach Carl Lombardo pushed his top player, Jeff Agne, forward to join Ian Gordona and it took time for RHAM to respond.

Walt Shicko scored twice, on a terrific 25-yard free kick and a header, to tie it seven minutes into the second half. The game spun on its axis around the 56-minute mark when RHAM keeper Alex Steurer needed a bit of fortune to keep a Gordona shot out. Then Geoff Zim-mitti created a chance for Romanchuck, who put his shot off the crossbar. Zimmitti was there to finish it for a 3-2 lead. RHAM put it away on goals by Scott Quinn a 25-yard bullet that was the best goal of the night and Steve Wade.

"Our kids did a great job responding in the second half, but obviously it was tough going with six freshmen in a big game like this," Lombardo said. "But I think we found out what we're made of with the comeback and that's something positive." Rocky Hill girls coach Bill Pacelia also saw his team prove its mettle. "I was surprised by the length of time we dominat ed a good Coventry team, but not by the way we played," Pacelia said. "I felt the key was starting well and getting the first goal. When we did that we settled down." Two goals by Melissa Delouriero and a third from Jessica DiManno gave Rocky Hill a convincing victory, but Coventry also played well in spells, largely-when Jen Oehler could find room to operate.

She was hound-ed by Rocky Hill freshman Liz Keehner, howeveCJWid never had a chance to take control of the game. "We got outworked, especially inside the-box," Coventry coach Chris D'Ambrosio said, "but I kind of expected we'd have trouble. We've never beenrhere before and I sensed the kids were real nervous. Elizabeth Slate, Greenwich, 16:50. Windham emaiiii in playoff picture! Xavier wins its ninth; Blake holds off John By ROBERTO GONZALEZ Courant Staff Writer MANCHESTER There was a moment when Lyman Memorial-Lebanon's Eric Blake knew he had to pass Plainfield's J.J. John or the race would be lost. There was little time, but he caught John at the foot of the hill leading to the finish line. For a second, they turned their heads and their eyes met.

They were so close they could've had a conversation. Blake's legs started to burn. John's knees started to give out. Finally, about three feet from the finish line, Blake surged ahead and beat John by 1 second to win the CIAC State Open boys cross country championship Friday at Wick-ham Park. "I knew I still had some left," said Blake, a senior.

"I knew I could push ahead." Blake finished the 3.1-mile course in 16 minutes, 5 seconds to win his first Open title and stake a claim as a serious contender for the New England championships Nov. 9 at Thetford Academy in Vermont. The top 25 individuals and top six teams at the Open qualified for the New England meet. Xavier-Middletown won its ninth Open team title with 93 points, followed by Amity Regional-Wood-bridge (177) and Fairfield Prep (204). Xavier had four runners finish in the top 25.

Xavier, the Class LL champion, was the heavy favorite, and as usual, didn't let that pressure get in the -way. "They welcome the challenge," Xavier coach Bob Michalski said. "It's inherent. Whenever it comes time to race, they're ready. They love the competition." Xavier was led by Neal D'Amato (sixth), Joseph Mediavilla (15th), Tyler Johnson (17th) and Patrick McMahon (19th).

But one runner who typified the team was Steven Lohmeyer, normally Xavier's No. 7 runner. Friday, he was the Falcons' No. 5 runner, finishing 44th overall and playing a key role in the victory. "He came out of nowhere," Michalski said.

"Whenever someone is sick or falters, someone else Akus, Manchester win their usual titles By ROBERTO GONZALEZ Courant Staff Writer MANCHESTER Afamiliar face came charging up the hill at the end of the CIAC State Open girls championship Friday. To nobody's surprise, Jill Akus of Norwich Free Academy won her third Open title in four years. Akus finished the 2.5-mile race in 15 minutes, 35 seconds. "It's nice to win it your senior year," Akus said. "I'm happy.

I just wanted to go out and do my best." Suzanne D'Angelo of Lewis Mills-Burlington was second followed by Abby Ames of E.O. Smith-Storrs Megan Coombs of Griswold, the Open runner-up last year, finished 65th when she lost her shoe after a runner made contact with her. Manchester again proved to be the top team in the state, winning the title with 89 points, followed by Norwich Free Academy (124), Cheshire (129) and RHAM-Hebron (132). Manchester defeated NFA last week to win the Class LL title. Both Akus and Manchester had something in common Friday.

They were relaxed and mentally prepared. Akus won her first Open title as a freshman, and finished second to Alison Hanscom of East Hartford her sophomore year. But the past two years, Akus has been a dominant force. Despite the pressure, NFA coach Gil LaPointe said Akus took the right approach to the race. She was calm, but determined.

"Sometimes she gets too cranked up and you see the fear in her eyes," LaPointe said. "You didn't see that in her last two races. She looked in control." Akus won her third Class LL title last week. One of the keys for her Friday was her experience. She oould tell the pack of runners ahead was starting to tire on one of the hills late in the race.

"I could hear them breathing a little harder," Akus said. "I'm strong on the hills. I knew I could take the lead." Manchester, ranked first in the state coaches poll, knew it was the favorite Friday. The Indians also Windham's offensive line opened some big holes for Lovely, whose 45-yard touchdown run with 8 minutes, 47 seconds left sealed the victory. He had a 48-yard run iri the first quarter.

1- "The line blocked, I got a great hole and had a nice run," said Lovely, who was never touched on the counter trap play. Baltazar Gonzalez had 81 yards on 14 carries for Windham, which had 400 total yards. Rockville 14-4, 2-2) gained only 75 of its 225 yards in the second half. Windham quarterback 'Joe Muzykoski completed 6 'ofl3 passes for 101 yards and kicked a 29-yard field goal to give Windham a 3-0 lead with 2:12 left in the first quarter. The second quarter did not start well for Windham.

Muzykoski fumbled on the first play and Rockville took over on its 35-yard line. Rockville quarterback 'j Dean Pybus (9-for-20, 127 yards) -then completed a 14-yard pass to Ortyl. Windam was called for. a personal foul after the play. On the next play, Pybus completed a 41 -yard touchdown pass to Nick Wheelock to give Rockville a 7-3 lead with 11:17 left in the half.

But Windham regained the lead when Muzykoski completed a 13-yard touchdown pass to Andrew Dickerman with 2:39 left in the half, making it 9-7. Dickerman also scored on. i 4-yard run in the third to make it 15-7. "They make you work for every yard you get," said Crudden, whose team committed 13 penalties for 114 yards. Windham coach Brian Crudden remembers it well. He would like to forget it. "We went to the dance but we didn't have a good time," said Crudden, whose team was shut out by Newtown in the Class MM final. Windham has three games remaining this year maybe more after defeating Rockvule 22-7 Friday in a CCC East game in Vernon. Windham (7-1, 4-1 CCC East) is third in the unofficial CIAC Class playoff rankings behind Killingly and Farmington.

The top four teams qualify for the playoffs, which begin Dec. 3. Windham plays East Hartford (1-6-1) next week and South Windsor (2-6) the following week. The most important game is Thanksgiving against Killingly (7-0). "If we play as a team and continue to play as a team, the rest of the season should go on like it's been," said halfback Ed Lovely, who rushed for 140 yards and a touchdown on 10 carries.

Windham's only loss was to Hartford Public, which lost to Rockville three weeks ago. That was a big concern, Crudden said. "The Rockville team that beat Hartford Public 21-0 is the Rockville team that we had to prepare for," Crudden said. New Britain Staff reports Jackie Farmer returned a blocked punt 25 yards for a touchdown and Todd Hill returned a fumble 55 yards for a score as New Britain beat Bristol Eastern 14-13 Friday in a CCC South football game in New Britain. Reinaldo Soto (37 carries, 261 yards) scored with 5:45 left for Bristol Eastern (6-2) but a quarterback sneak failed on the two-point conversion.

Bill Woods' 30-yard field goal attempt to win the game with 19 seconds left was blocked by New Britain's Tywann Gibson. Brian Yanke also scored for Bristol Eastern. Eric Elliott rushed for 122 yards on 23 carries for New Britain (3-4-1). In other CCC South games: Southington 48, Bristol Central 18: A big game from Tyler Freberg helped Southington (6-2) defeat Bristol Central (3-4-1) in Bristol. Freberg had five touchdowns, caught three passes for 86 yards and rushed for 141 yards on 18 carries.

"I knew there were four guys out there who could win it." John and Blake had never raced each other. They came close, but a dual meet between their schools was canceled. "We seemed to miss each other," John said. "We have run on the same day, but in different races." John wasn't too upset, knowing they'll race again in the New England championship.
