But about 2 miles into the race, Yohannes noticed Longo having trouble.

"His head started shaking," Yohannes said. "He looked woozy. I thought he was going to win the race today. I feel pretty bad to see him finish like this." Then, Maheu started to pass people and behind only Yohannes. Yohannes started to falter; Maheu's legs were still fresh.

The race belonged to Maheu. Before the meet, the Simsbury team was relaxed. This week, the top five runners shaved their heads for unity and just some crazy fun, they said. "The chemistry on the team is just great," said Simsbury's Mike Brouillet, who finished sixth in 16:29. "Every one fits in so well." Earlier in the season, Simsbury defeated both Xavier and Manchester in the championship race of the Wickham Invitational.

But some dismissed the victory as a midsea-son race, which didn't mean much. Even Simsbury downplayed the victory. Simsbury then went on to win the Class title, while Manchester and Xavier competed in Class LL. Xavier won the LL meet. The Trojans said they still felt they needed to prove themselves.

The plan? "Our philosophy was, when you cross the finish line, you better be exhausted," Brouillet said. Brouillet was followed by teammates Ryan Eckel (16:45, 22nd) and Peter Rodrigues (17:03, 29th). "At the beginning of the year, I knew winning the Open was a possibility," Simsbury coach Mike Cohen said. "As the season progressed, I realized it was a greater possibility. The guys didn't disappoint.

They all did a tremendous job." Hanscom increased her lead to about 75 yards over the second- place group as she neared the fin--'; ish. Brand eventually dropped and finished seventh but' she was far from disappointed. JJ In fact, Brand said she had two- reasons to celebrate: "Alison and f' have been friends for a long I'm excited for her because deserved to win. Teamwise, thrilled. This was our goal and it's!" an awesome feeling to win like this." For Manchester, the top team irk" the state coaches poll all victory did not come easily.

Manchester coach Stan Bebyn said Neumayer was taken to Manchester Memorial -Hospital, where she was treated for I dehydration and released. Bebyn said he did not learn of I Neumayer's trouble until he got to the finish line and spoke with his other runners. Initially, Bebyn said," he expected the loss of Neumayer ta -spoil his team's chances of But Manchester won with itst; depth, placing three runners (Brand, No. 12 Jennifer Gates No.

We needed someone to step up and Jen did that. This is the proudest moment of my life and my coaching career." Hanscom, a senior at East Hartford, left little doubt that she is the best in the state, winning the Open championship in 15 minutes, 35 seconds for 2.4 miles. Manchester finished with 91 points to win the team title ahead of Cheshire (133) and Wolcott (144). It was Manchester's first State Open girls title. Hanscom also made history, becoming East Hartford's first State Open girls champion.

Hanscom, 15th last year in the Open, was alone as she turned up the hill for the final 250 yards. Hanscom finished 18 seconds ahead of 1993 Open champion Jill Akus of Norwich Free Academy. Emily Kane of Weston and NFA's Stephanie Johnson also finished in 15:53. "I don't think it was a fluke," Hanscom said. "After the time 15:34 I ran last week, everybody should have known that I'd be there today.

I knew I would make All-State top 25, but I wasn't sure I would be this high up. But this is my home course. I run here almost every day and I consider myself lucky to have had the advantage of running here." Hanscom, who also won the CCC East and Class LL meets at Wickham Park, used her course knowledge to set a fast pace that gave her an early lead over Akus, Johnson and Manchester's Shelley Brand. "The pace was fast and I just decided to go out early," Hanscom said. "I thought the pack would stick with me a little longer, but halfway through the race I started to pull away a little.

I thought about going too fast, but once I had the lead I decided not to change my pace." 4,000 meters (2.4 miles) Team: 1. Manchester, 91: 2. Cheshire. 133; 3. Wolcott, 144: 4.

By ROBERTO GONZALEZ Courant Staff Writer MANCHESTER The advance word on Xavier-Middletown's Steve Maheu was he had a tremendous kick: an explosive burst of speed that would simply wipe out his competition. Maheu, a junior, lived up to his billing. Maheu kicked past Hartford Public's Samson Yohannes about 300 yards before the finish of the 3.1-mile course to win the CIAC State Open boys cross country championship Friday at Wickham Park in Manchester. Despite the mild temperature in the'mid-70s, Maheu finished in 16 minutes, 9 seconds. He was dragged out of the chute and eventually taken to Manchester Hospital, where he was observed and released. "If anybody deserved to win this, he did," Holy Cross coach Dave Cohen said. "The attitude he has and the preparation he put into this race was incredible.

It's just a shame." Cohen said Longo had been fighting a head cold all week, but seemed ready before the race. Simsbury won the team title for the first time with 100 points, fol-qwed by Manchester (128) and r-Middletown (Hi). ''After the race Maheu didn't say much. He had no grand plan or strategy, he said. His plan, he said, was, "To just go out and run my best." The race started on a fast pace, with Longo, Yohannes, Litchfield's Brian Shafer and Tolland's Alex Ze-mek in the leaders' pack.

It didn't. In fact, no goals came after Alfieri's as the teams played to a 1-1 tie. West Division winner Rocky Hill (13-1-3) and East winner RHAM (12-1-4) "will share the league title.

"It would have been nice to have another goal," said Alfieri, a "It would have been nice if anybody on our team would have gotten one. But one is better than Inone." The teams played 100 minutes, 'including two 10-minute overtimes. Last year, RHAM defeated Rocky Hill 3-2 in overtime for the title. Both teams will be the No. 3 seed in their respective classes in the state tournament.

Rocky Hill plays the winner of the Bacon Academy SColchester)-Putnam game Tues-lay in Rocky Hill in Class S. In Class RHAM plays the winner of the New Canaan-Woodstock Academy game at home Tuesday. Rocky Hill coach Bill Pacelia should be able to eat normally by then. Pacelia said games such as the one Friday, the ones he expects to be close, keep him from eating lunch. But he'll be able to digest the fie.

"I am absolutely happy to get out of here with a tie," Pacelia said. "I hate to say that, but it's true. They played better than we did today. We had 10 or 12 opportunities but their goalie junior Betsy Caron, 10 saves is just as good as ours freshman Mary-Kate Galusha, 20 saves. They kept the pressure on our defense from start to finish." On the other side, RHAM coach Jim O'Brien said he wasn't happy, although it was hard to tell by the jlook on his face.

O'Brien watched his team domi- nate the Terriers with only one goal to show for it. But, with Galusha and a defense that hasn't allowed more than two goals in one game this season, he could understand the outcome. "The adrenaline was flowing," Galusha said. "You don't think about how hot it is in there." Most of the game was played in front of Galusha, who had several saves.

"She had one where the ball came hard, she jumped and tipped it over the goal. It was pretty," O'Brien said. "That was a big-time save." For a while, Rocky Hill slowed RHAM's momentum in the first half when Melissa DeLoureiro lined a free kick from the top of the penalty area. The shot bounced off the left post and in with 24:48 remaining in the half. "They were dominating us but we had opportunities," DeLoureiro said.

Football New Britain 28, Maloney-Mer-iden 27: Carlos Ramos (13 carries, 55 yards) scored with 4:19 remaining on a 7-yard run to give New Britain (5-3) a 28-19 lead as they went on to beat Maloney (4-4) in Meriden. On the ensuing kickoff Maloney took over on the 50-yard line and scored as Uriah Siniscalco caught a 32-yard pass from Greg McNeil with 2:47 remaining. Maloney attempted an onside kick but New Britain recovered and ran out the clock. Joe Annino (two receptions, 51 yards) started the fourth quarter scoring for Maloney when he caught a 36-yard pass from Todd McNeil (5-for-12. 101 yards) with 11:51 left.
