More than $10,000 has been raised for Czajka, who has cystic fibrosis and needs a lung transplant. She is on the organ donor list at Yale-New Haven Hospital.

Medicaid and Social Security will pay for most of the cost of her surgery, but not other related costs. Czajka is the 28-year-old daughter of Steve and Beth Turner Czajka of Cromwell. Her parents are members of the Class of 1962 of Middle-town's Woodrow Wilson High School. The class has spearheaded the fund-raising. "It's been a very surprising response," Penny Czajka said.

"I'm overwhelmed. I don't know how to thank them. I'm grateful for all the people who have helped me." Czajka said she is feeling fine, but she still has her bad days. "I still exercise once a week," she said. "I'm doing really, really well." Susan Beckley McCann is pleasantly surprised that strangers from across the state have opened their hearts and pocketbooks to the daughter of two of her friends.

"I'm thrilled of what's been going on," said McCann, an East Hampton resident. A core group of 13 classmates started raising money for Czajka two months ago. McCann said the group set a goal of $15,000. Since the plight of Penny Czajka was reported by The Courant on June 12, scores of people have donated money and written and called to offer support. "I'm very surprised.

The response has been overwhelming," said Gail Carta Giardina, a classmate. "It's heartwarming." McCann was not surprised by the support shown by the Class of 1962. McCann said the group will sell $1 raffle tickets during the Spirit of Middletown Day on Sept. 7. Winners will receive a new color television or a microwave oven.

The next day the group will host a reception in Czajka's honor from 2 to 5 p.m. at the Polish Falcon's Grove, 144 Prout Hill Road in Credit Card 1 Protection Service 3 'GJENERAL ft 'Congress. Numbers and addresses for Connecticut's U.S. Ifenators and representatives. Lottery Line.
