C6 THE HARTFORD COURANT: Saturday, November 4, 1995 1N a 4 7 '-i I It' -i vl fx. .1 V- For Wilson, bad start, goodfimsh! By ROBERTO GONZALEZ Courant Staff Writer irtni MANCHESTER When the race started Friday, Dan Wilson quickly found himself in trouble. He Ms boxed in and rapidly losing ground. As the pack surged ahead, it splattered the front of his jersey with mudV Simply put, not a good start. Especially if you were one of the favorites in the CIAC Dnve ArtAn State Open boys cross country POys upen championship.

"I knew I had to get up near to the front as sootj I could," Wilson said. "I got caught in a crowd. It was pretty hectic. I had to pick off too many people." nr. Wilson, who won the Class title Monday for Notre Dame-West Haven, gained ground on the lead pack.

Finally, he had passed all but one runner defending Open champion Steve Maheu of Xavier-Middletown. It wasn't easy, but Wilson finally caught Maheu and defeated him, finishing the 3.1-mile race in 16 minutes, 20 seconds to win the Open title at Wickham Park. Maheu, winner of the Class LL title MondayV'fin-ished second followed by Mike Brookfield this year's Class Manchester won the team title with 122 points; Xavier (131) was second. Manchester last won the State Open in 1993. Wilson, a junior, finished 11th last year.

WHen Wilson crossed the finish line, he thrust his fist in the air in triumph. "All season long I worked hard to win this," Wilsgn said. "It's a great feeling. I really can't describe itw- The race was difficult. Wilson caught Maheu by the middle of the race, but that didn't last long.

Maheu regained the lead. "My first thought was, 'I can't let this guy Wilson said. "I just made up my mind to go after hiWi-f Wilson caught Maheu again inside the last rhUe and hung on to win. Like Wilson, the Manchester boys team had trouble at the start. "Instead of a straight line, we got pinched back," coach Mike Bendzinski said.

"The guys fell back like in the 80s. Their legs felt like lead by the time they got back into their positions." At the start, Manchester's top runner, Dan Uriario, started back about 20th, but finished sixth. Teammate Matt Soucy started back in the 70s, but fought his way to 38th. "Any lesser individuals could've chucked it," Bendzinski said. "I'm really proud of the kids for persevering." Consistency has been the key for Manchestef this season.

Last year, it lost to Xavier in Class LL, then lost the Open to Simsbury. But Manchester rebounded, winning the New England championship. 2 This year, Manchester has won the CCC East, Class LL and Open championships. What's the difference? "Our team is so much more mature this year," Uriano said. "And we're really good freinds.

We support each other, which is the most important thing." Akus, NFA make it back to the top By ROBERTO GONZALEZ Courant Staff Writer MANCHESTER The grin said it all. Jill Akus of Norwich Free Academy had just been asked how it felt to win the CIAC State Open girls cross country title again, after winning for the first time two years ago as a freshman. Oh, it feels great," said Akus, Girl Onn runner-up last year. "As a "Ia freshman, I knew what it meant to win, but now I appreciate it a little bit more. The (Competition is a lot better this year." Welcome back, Jill.

Akus won the 2.5-mile race Friday at Wickham Park in 15 minutes, 51 seconds, eight seconds ahead of freshman Megan Coombs of Griswold. NFA also won its first Open title since 1 993 with 45 points, placing five runners in the top 25. Welcome back, NFA. "We've been on a mission all year," NFA coach Gil LaPointe said. "Last year we never seemed all together.

We didn't seem to be in sync. This year, we were in sync." NFA was ranked first in the state coaches poll for much of the season and won the Class LL title Monday. Last season, NFA, bothered by nagging injuries, finished second to Manchester in LL and was fourth in the Open. "This year we backed off a bit," LaPointe said. "We sort of nursed the injuries along, which is easy to say when you have the luxury of a big, deep team.

Akus was hampered last season by pain in her knees, which was ultimately diagnosed as growing pains, LaPointe said. So this year LaPointe changed Akus' training routine by staying away from hills and running on softer surfaces. Other NFA runners took it easy in some meets or skipped meets to rest and heal properly. By the end of the season, the team was ready. Monday, Akus and the Wildcats won the LL meet with an astonishing 21 points.

The girls Open race was wild, exciting and unpredictable. First-year runner and Class MM champion Sara Titus of Watertown surprised many by jumping out to a large lead at the start. "I wanted to see what would happen if I took off," said Titus, a senior who finished seventh. Titus maintained the lead after the first mile, but the pack of Akus, South Windsor's Maura Danahy, Coombs and Wolcott's Melissa Rupenski closed in. Akus made her move about 1 miles into the race, taking a lead she never relinquished.

"I was trying to focus more on myself," Akus said. "It makes you relax more. I handle it better that way." Danahy, the Class champion, said she couldn't find the energy to pursue Akus. "My body went right down," said Danahy, who finished fourth. "I wasn't up to my ability.

I was overly tired. I was really nervous in the beginning. I thought about the race the whole day during school." Coombs charged up the last hill and caught Rupenski just yards from the finish line for second. A Notre Dame-West Haven's Dan Wilson, second from left, and Maloney-Meriden's Rick Rodriguez help set the early pace in the Open boys meet at Wickham Park in Manchester. Wilson held off Steve Maheu of Xavier-Middletown for the title.

4 NFA's Jill Akus and Megan Coombs of Griswold lock up in the Open girls meet. Akus defeated Coombs by eight seconds. New Britain quarterback Gregg Wysocki (8 of 18, 147 yards, one TD, two interceptions) was forced into being a one-man show.

Running backs Tony Morales and Nate Johnson were injured last week in a victory over Bulkeley-Hartford and did not play. They have combined for 22 touchdowns. "They blitzed us a lot," New Britain coach Len Corto said. "Greg handled it as best he could. When we have our running game going, it opens up our passing game.

We missed those guys but we're not making excuses. Maloney took it to us tonight, but we'll be back." Maloney's Oscar Gonzalez, Mike Owen, Marc Francis, Nando Parete and Brian Kapustinski, who also scored twice at fullback, were in Wysocki's view all game. "We missed some people because of injuries but the guys that filled in took it to another level and played well," Kapustinski said. One player the Spartans missed was receiver and cornerback Joe Annino. Spikes replaced him and intercepted a pass.

"They got some big plays on us and scored on a big play," said Spikes, who pushed his career state-record touchdown total to 74 with runs of 2, 45 and 48 yards, and his rushing yardage this season to 1,212. "After that we just settled down and got after them." New Britain led once, 7-6, when Wysocki hit Josue Irizarry with a 29-yard touchdown pass in the first quarter. But when Spikes answered with a 2-yard run with 4 minutes, 4 1 seconds left in the second quarter for a 12-7 lead, the Spartans didn't give up another point until late in the fourth with the JV team. "This has to be right up there with one of the best defensive games we've played," Maloney coach Rob Szymaszek said. "And probably one of our best games, period.

These kids have a lot of chemistry. Chemistry, love and some talent."
