He wonld lw as glad as any one to see the transfer of land made easy and cheap, but ha is skeptical about the efileacy of the plans proposed by the radicals. His notion is that the land quesistion should be dealt with by persons who know something about land, aud not by theorizing cockneys.

He vould sweep the ecclesiastical commission out of the way, and so make make it possible for clergymen and trustees of charitable funds to sell their acres and invest the proceeds in consols. Michael Hogan got drunk yesterday and sat on a stringer on the dock until he fell in the river with a mighty splash. He was hauled out and Officer Walter 4mith took him to the station to dry off.

Colonel M. Joslyn informs the Times that he positively declines 'to be a candidate for the legislature. Under these circumstances it is hinted that Mr. E. S.

Cleveland may be the nominee for the senate, and Mahlon R. West and Michael F. M. Cook, of Volmil We are prepared to guarantee to weighing Ave pounds more than his regular racer. with great lucidity. The question, to what extent the Bible purports to be a revelation, from God, is considered. It contains the record of gcreral revelations.

There is the primitive revelation which was the faith of Abraham and the other patriarchs; the Mosaic dLsjiensa-tion; aud the Christian revelation. Ech of these, in turn, rffinns the essential features of the others. Hence the unity of the Bible. There are indisputable indications of a primeval revelation of God's truth to man, and this fact goes against the evolutionary theory of man's origin. Dr.

Bowen's discussion of the primitive and fundamental truths respecting the nuiverse, man, and God, hich underlie these three revelations, is exceedingly able and helpful. The fifth chapter is concerned with the Poetry of the Bible. I know nothing in all (ireek, Latin, or English poetry, that matches the sublimity aud frrandetir, the magnificent sweep, of this description Psi-lm lSj of the providence of God as manifested in the phenomena of nature. a sympathy with all living things, but etqieciaily with the weak, the needy, and the unfortunate, is the source of that tenderness ami pathos of Hebrew poetry which is a great eliaraote.ri.stic of it. The book of Job is the grandest philosophical poefu in he literature of the orld. These Hrtbrew poems are at least as interesting and important, even in their exclusively secular aspect, as the masterpieces of Cil-eek literature. The common-sense views which the author puts forth concerning the history contained in the Bible are very refreshing, however they may off snd "the higher hUtorical criticism." The general reader will find here just the plain facts, in whose light only can the Hebrew histories be fairly rated, and some very pretty fun pokod at the "ponderous erudition and perverse ingenuity of professional critics." instructive. X.ETTEHS FHUH TUE VEOPLE, Oallatulet A Suggestion. To the Editor of The Cocrast: I see in the papr of to-d a suggestion that something should be done by the city of Hartford to do honor to the name of Dr. Gallaudet. It has occurred to me for soma time past that it would be a pleasant and grateful compliment to his memory to give his name to the avenue that runs past the building which is his chief monu-meut.

The name of Asylum avenue is one that does not suggest pleasant associations. It sucKests rather the iieighboriuHHl of ati iuyt tuition for the insane, which is not airreeable. The school for deaf mutes might mope properly be called an institution than An asylum, as it is not a place of refuge or protection so much as a or education and training, where the pupils go forth to the duties and activities of life. To call what is now known as Asylum avenue, from the west side of the railroad, tialiaudet avenue, would souud more pleasantlv and le much easier to enunciate. The recurrence of two words, both lieginning wilh a vowel, is hard to proitouuoe.

The onlv inconvenience that would re-suit from the change would be the re-minioeriiig of-the houses, hut this would not he muoh. I have made this suggestion to several residents on he avenue and it has been well received. I sub-nut it through your paper to the common council. October 37, lSso. o.
