What gives this story its awful power isifj Special Correspondence of 'In cocraitt. Im Camp, Aoirosdack MnntTllss, Sept. 19, 1S08. Iu my last letter, I promised to write of the method of killing deer at this season of the year, and ho we iiot oar first deer. me premise this by rcfereuce to the way of hunting in winter and early summer.

In the winter the plan is called "still hunting." When there is sufficient snow upon the ground, the. hunter seeks the woods, aud makes his way as cautiously and quietly as possible, hopiug to catch a sight of his game before he Is himself seen, or, falling in this, by quick aim to get a shot before the doer is without the range of his trusty rifle. In the early summer, the plaa is by "night huntiug." This is done by going out In boats along the margin of lakes or upon tho bank of rivtrn. a strong light being fastened In the bow of the boat. Immediately behind which is seated one withaguu, while another iulctiy paddles the boat.

The darkest nights are leL The light so enchains the attention ol the deer that a boat rusy be quietly rowed upon him without exciting suspicion. This Is deemed the most murderous plan, as many deer are wounded, but yet able to run into the woods, where they are soou lost sight of, aud lie down to die. At thU season, the plan Is to put dogs upou their tracks aud drive them into the water. The hunters are stationed upou some commanding point, Irom which they can overlook a lake or river; aud a deer enter a lk, th Is to cot between htm and the nearest land, aud theu row upon and shoot him. Kasiersaid than doue.

In many ways, the deer baUlea the inexpert hunter; aud not utifrequently the expert ia reminded that "there's ruauy a slip betwixt the cup and lip." Ho that an old and experienced hunter informs. Hie that he ha( learned not to foej sure of any deer until he has a knife iu his throat. He has shot a deer, seen him fall, and leisurely walked up to within six feet of him, and then seen him gather suttieient strength to spring up and bound into the woods, and escape. It may seem a little too much like taking "uuilue advantage" of a deer to row upon and shoot him In the water. 1 thought so, still think so; and yet a friend and 1 rowed hard against a strong wind, and tru-d to kill a large doe, as she was swimming for the woods.

But 1 wanted to kill one deer, arid so the excitement stilled my scruples. But, scruples or no scruples, it waa all the same to that deer. I'll not stop to tell you how 1 ahntmt killed her. But I am sure 1 would not shoot a young fawn while swimming for 'oer life" that's too cruel. Our principal guide, with a brother, has bwn living in these woods for twelve years.

During the first year they killed about sixty deer, which number might have been doubled, with their present knowledge of the bablts, ol the deer. The lirst day we hunted, six of our party were stationed iion three lakes or ponds, and one upon a tongue of land between two rivers or creeks. Our guide took five hounds with him, boldimr all by small chains, and pushed into the woods. As soou as the dogs struck afresh track, he would release one, and go on with the others until all were released, if enough fresh tracks conld le found. Once upon a fresh track, a good dog will follow It until he rinds the deer or loses the track in water, when he will return to camp.

It the gtiltle leaves camp before eiijht o'clock, the dogs will nsnaily be in by two o'clock, and the chase is tip." On this day, but one deer was seen by our whole party. One of the most experienced hunters, and one of the best "shots" of the party, had "just as good a shot at a large buck as he wanted," and, by some unaccountable means, missed liim. The same man, a day or two tebr, shot a fine buck as he was ugion the lull run, just entering the wood. The ball entered hi hip and lodged in the opposite fore shoulder and yet he ran almut thirty rods belore he fell. truth.

"IF, TES, AND PK1IAP9." E.lwiird Everett Hale's volume of stones will soon appear, with the title of "If, Yes, and Perhaps." VVe believe this is the name of one of ihs pieces. Mr. Hale is a man of the greatest industry, and has written many stories and sketches ol which the general publle has not yet heard. Some years ago be wrote a story fof cne of Frank Lalie's prizes, and we presume this will appear lu the new volume.

It is worth a place la It, at any rate. The "Man Without a Country," which so deceived and provoked many dull people by its realistic toue, will of course be Included i and also that funny aUair, "My Double, and How He V'ndld Me," and the other stories iu which the Sandemauian clergyman relates his curiona experience. Recently Mr. Hale has undertaken to "write up" certain social and business reforms and his "Visits to Bytiaris," and "How We Lived iu Naguadavlck" (just printed in toe Boston AartriUxr) have a practical character wbieh gives them a new value beyond even what they have for the lover ol stories, and ol that rich humor in which Mr. Hale excels nearly all our magazine writers.

a mw book bt the At-riiOB or "os tub cam." Willia-n Everett, who has a book in press, and soon to be published by Lee Shepard of Boston, is a son of Eiward Everett, not popular, and indeed somewhat laughed at by many of the Cambridge and Boston literati, hut a young man ol excellent abilities and great information, lie lives in Winchester, near Boston, on his father's old estate, has lately taken much interest in politics and ia frequently on the stump, speaking for the Republican candidates. The rough and tnm-ble of politic will doubtless wear off some of hla fastidiousness, and he may fairly expect a successful career as a politician, and also as a man ol letters. His new book Is for youngsters, and exhibits life at the Boston Latin School, under the title of "Changing Base; or What Edward Rice Learnt." AXTUONr Ttt01.UjJB'i SBW SoVBU Anthony Trollops was iu this country last whiter and spring, taking superficial views of our politics. We believe he was a constatit attendant upon the Impeachment Trial, and irom the alarming speeches of Messrs. Curtis, Evans and Stanbery, inferred that dreadful things were Id preparation for this country if the "radicals" should carry out their "mad scheme." He has lately published to the Knglish people Jiis views on American affairs.

We are glad to see, however, that he has not neglected his own proper work. He docs write good stories. 1 hey are not like Thackeray's or George Eliot's, but then it is a good deal to say that they are not like Miss Braddou'a: snd the 6 Lory -reading public, who does not belong to it will be glad to hear that his new serial enti conttrmatory note of Miss Dickinson the end of the volume.
