D.B. DEAR MRS. I know many women who will gadly continue the pill program rather than take even an occasional shot. The only way to remember, of course, is to have a set time each day when you brush your teeth at bedtime, for example. Also, most oral contraceptives come in a calendar-type container that should help jog your memory in this connection.

Long-term contraception by means of injection, however, has undergone extensive testing and has proven highly effective. Known as medroxyprogesterone acetate, the contraceptive is injected only once every three months, and provides protection comparable to that of the daily pill. It is now awaiting approval by the Food and Drug Administration, and hopefully will be released for public use in the near future. Lindsay Curtis, c-o The Hartford Courant. By DR. LINDSAY R. CURTIS DEAR DR. CURTIS: About two years ago you wrote an article which referred to guilt feelings among women who had undergone abortions.

Now that the laws have been however, abortion has pretty well become the way of the world. As a result, I'm wondering whether guilt in that connection isn't a thing of the past. A.R. DEAR Certainly abortion has become the American way, if not the way of the world. An estimated 100,000 abortions will be performed in California alone this year a sad commentary on the rise of sexual promiscuity, and a badge of failure with respect to contraception and family planning.

Despite the popularity of abortion, however, some women still experience guilt in this connection. A recent study of 50 women who had undergone therapeutic abortion (for health reasons) revealed that 29 had positive or favorable reactions, while ten had no special response one way or another. Four women, however, suffered extreme feelings of guilt. Studies indicate, moreover, that guilt related to abortion is fairly common among girls age 18 and younger. In consequence, doctors should be particularly responsive to the emotional needs of such patients, taking pains to offer follow-up counselling and encouragement.

DEAR DR. CURTIS: What's the latest on long-term contraceptives? How wonder best known creators of cut pa now believe that it held "bishop" which was a hot steaming punch.
