Connolly, Friend Of State Politicians, Dies SIMSBURY James C. Connolly, 74, of 91 Old Farms Road, died Thursday in a convalescent home after a long illness. He was the husband of state Rep. Virginia S. Connolly, R-16th and was chief fund-raiser for the Republican State Central Committee during the administration of Gov.

John Lodge 25 years ago. Mr. Connolly was born in Hartford and grew up in politics with the late Democratic State Chairman John M. Bailey and the late former Hartford Democratic political boss, Tony Zazzaro. In his youth, Connolly got the nickname "Tiger" because he was a "scrapper." Bailey, until his death last summer, used to call Connolly on the phone to talk about the good old days" in Hartford and always called him "Tiger." Connolly was a loyal Democrat in his early Hartford days until President Franklin D.

Roosevelt began making appointments to the U.S. Supreme Court. Mrs. Woodward Dies; Taught In Wethersfield THE HARTFORD COURANT: Friday, November 21, 1975 When Roosevelt tried to the court, Connolly registered as a Republican. He served as finance secretary of the Republican State Central Committee from 1950 to 1954.

Connolly was former regional manager for Flexible a division of General Motors which sold ambulances, hearses and buses. His territory included New England and upstate New York. Connolly worked at the Clayton Gengras Auto Dealership in Hartford from 1939 to 1941. He tried to enlist in the Army and the Navy but was turned down twice because he had had a heart attack. Still wanting to do something for his country at war, Connolly got a job in the production department at Colt Manufacturing in Hartford which produced guns for American soldiers.

He remained at Colt's about a year and then joined the now-defunct Hartford Buick Co. as a salesman and stayed with the auto firm about a decade. Connolly was a close friend of Jim Thorpe, the college athlete who excelled in baseball, football and track. He went on a baseball barnstorming tour with Thorpe in Buffalo and Schenectady, N.Y. in the 1920s.

Connolly and his family moved here in 1939. Besides his wife, he leaves a son. Atty. James P. Connolly; a daughter, Mrs.

Pamela Reynolds and three grandchildren, all of Simsbury. The funeral is Saturday at 9:30 a.m. at the Vincent Funeral Home, 880 Hopmeadow Simsbury and 10 a.m. at St. Mary's Church, Simsbury.

Phaneuf, 68, of 93 Old Canterbury Turnpike, Norwich, died Thursday afternoonata Plainfield convalescent hospital after a long illness. He was a lifelong resident of the Taftville section of Norwich. He was a storekeeper at the Montville plant of the Connecticut Light and Power Co. for more than 35 years before retiring in 1968. He was a member of Sacred Heart Church, Taftville, the Norwich Democratic Town Committee, past president of the Sacred Heart Shyma Club and a member of the Church's Holy Name Society, the Germainia Club, the Union St.

Jean Baptist Society and the Taftville Volunteer Fire Department. He leaves two sons, Eugene E. Phaneuf of West Hartford and Rene N. Phaneuf of Taftville: a daughter, Mrs. Noella Martin of Norwich; two brothers, Leodore Phaneuf of Taftville and George Phaneuf of Baltic; three sisters, Mrs.

Gen. Robert H. Mar-. tinson, Army 62, of 11 Catherine a Legion of Merit award winner, died Thursday at St. Francis Hospital.

Gen. Martinson served in the Army 30 years, stationed at state headquarters, selective service systems, before retiring four years ago. He was awarded the Legion of Merit Award, a presldential citation, in 1971 for distinguished service. He was a life member of the National Guard Association, the Reserve Officers Association, the Retired Officers Association, and the National Guard Association of Connecticut. He was a member and former secretary of the Hartford Chapter of the National Sojourners, the Hartford Camp, Heroes of '76 and the Officer Club of Connecticut.

He leaves his wife, Mrs. Helen Kelleher Martinson of Hartford; two sons. Robert A. Martinson of Hartford and Kenneth Martinson of West Hartford: a daughter. Mrs.

Born in Beaver Falls, she lived in Wethersfield many years before moving to Rocky Hill. She was an English teacher at the American College for Women in Cairo, Egypt, and was a graduate of Geneva College, Geneva, N.Y.

Besides her husband, she leaves three sons, Miles H. Woodward of Houston, Bruce B. Woodward Wethersfield and David N. Woodward of Hartford. Memorial services will be held Saturday at 11 a.m.
