Moynihan, a neighbor who has complained to the town about the odor from the animals in the past, said Thursday that he did not think everyone who signed the petition lived close enough to the area to be good judges. "A barn stinks and we're very, very close to that barn," said Moynihan, who lives at 89 Arch Road. Although several neighbors have complained, Freemantle, Bryan and Stephen blame Moynihan for stirring up the controversy. Stephen said he and other children enjoyed visiting the animals. But Moynihan, in a letter to Kushner a year ago, said the value of his house was affected by the "unsightly zoning violation" next door.

CHEN Courant Correspondent AVON A neighborhood group is rallying behind two residents who are following their barnyard animals out of town after a dispute with officials and others. Stephen Turpak, a 13-year-old, submitted a petition signed by 35 residents to the town zoning enforcement officer asking officials to allow the neighbors to keep the animals. "We do not consider their stable or corral to be a nuisance and have not been bothered by odors, flies or noise," said the petition.

Denise Bryan and Lloyd Freeman-tie had kept at least three horses, four ponies, a goat, a sheep, 20 rabbits, two dogs and a cat at 93 Arch Road. A few neighbors complained to town officials about odor and flies. The farm animals have been removed, at least one horse has been sold, and Freemantle and Bryan plan to leave by the end of the month. "I was sorry the petition was done so late," Bryan said.
