ends Sat. us of fragrance PHn mm TZ. Extracts from succulent aloe plants have been fsed for centuries to relieve various afflictions. If you believe everything said about the powers' of the aloe vera plant, it's the miracle cure for which man always has searched. lissome people say it can cure anything from boils to blindness.

It's rumored to relieve colitis, arthritis, gastritis and bursitis. If you ache, itch, or blink aloe vera will cure the cause of discomfort. It's hawked as an ingredient in lotions and laxatives, creams, ointments and cosmetics of ev-'erjTkind. And it's sold straight, as a gel. But does it work? It won't cure cancer.

And no fine's been reported poisoned by it. But aside from liat, very little scientific testing has been done on aloe vera. It's up to you and what you want to believe Jut be reasonable. If you want to put aloe vera on a sunburn or scrape, rub it on your tennis elbow, Srash your hair in, it, smear it on the baby's rash "fliat's just fine, and it may help. What bothers me are some of the outrageous claims made for aloe vera that it cures cancer, tuberculosis, diabetes, multiple sclerosis and even blindness.

That is pure and simple quackery and it's a shame, because whatever good aloe vera may be, a lot of people could be turned off when the so-called miracle plant doesn't live up to the exaggerated claims made for it. Commercial Haters Do people really care about the commercials they see on television? A survey done recently by a New York ad agency suggests they care very much, and what they care about most is good taste, since nearly 40 percent of those polled thought that at least some television advertising is in poor taste. More than half of those polled (about 55 percent) said they stay away from products whose commercials they dislike. Which products do viewers say they dislike most? According to the survey, they found designer jeans were too suggestive; feminine hygiene products too personal; bras, girdles and pantyhose were a bit of both too personal and too suggestive and antacids and laxatives were just plain distasteful. But do the responses of these TV viewers to the poll really reflect their buying habits? A vice president of Hanes Hosiery said that people may say that they don't like his company's Underalls ads, but they're buying $100 million worth of Underalls a year.

That hardly adds up to a boycott! What about Proctor and Gamble's "Charmin" ads, or Lever Brothers' famous "ring around the Consumers have been complaining to me about those advertisements for years, but they must work. Mr. Whipple has been pestering his customers not squeeze the Charmin since 1964, and Wisk's "ring around the collar" ad has been around for, 12 years. Irritating? Perhaps, but effective. And that, after all, is the bottom line in advertising.

I Hot Tub Danger The element that makes a water spa so relaxing; is all that water rushing and bubbling all around you. That takes a pretty powerful pump; pulling the water out a drain and back into the tub through the whirlpool jets. The danger is in spas and pools that have only one drain at the bottom: The suction at that drain can be powerful enough to trap a person and hold him or her underwater. It already has happened a number of times. The Consumer Product Safety Commission has at least 20 such incidents on record, and half of them were fatal.

Two girls in Texas drowned in separate accidents when their waist-length hair was swept into, a drain opening and held fast. I Another girl in California got too close to an uncovered drain and she was stuck to the bottom of the spa by her stomach and chest. Two adults were unable to free her until the pump was turned off. In another case, an infant was almost disemboweled by the force of a spa pump. How can you guard against such an accident? First; check your pool or spa.

If it has two drains one en the bottom and one at the side you're OK, and there's no danger of blocking just one drain P1- I If it has just one bottom drain, install an anti-vortex drain cover over the flat grate. They're inexpensive, and any pool or spa supply store should have one. 'Also, be sure there's a pump shutoff switch located where you can get to it quickly. Too often, the switches are installed out of the way, even locked in a shed to keep people from tampering with them. That can be deadly.
