Elizabeth C. Ames, 79, of Shore Road, Old Lyme, died Monday (Dec. 14, 1987) at Nutmeg Pavilion Convalescent Home, New London. She was born Nov. 18, 1908, in Hartford, the daughter of the late Bernard and Bridget (Connors) Carey.

She had been a resident of Old Lyme since 1948 was formerly of Hartford. Mrs. Ames was a produce clerk at Mitchell's Market in Niantic, from 1961 until her retirement in 1971. She was the widow of the late Charles B. Ames.

He died April 14, 1974. She was a member of St. Agnes Church in Niantic, where she had taught religious education. She was also a member of the Rogers Lake Seniors Club in Old Lyme. She is survived be a daughter, Carol Kita of South Lyme; a brother, James Carey of North Lauderdale, a sister, Helen Devine of Middletown; and two grandchildren.

Funeral service will be held on Wednesday (Dec. 16), 9:00 a.m., from the Old Lyme Funeral Home of Alderson-Prentis, Beckwith Lane, to a mass of Christian burial, 10:00 a.m., at St. Agnes Church, Haigh Avenue, Niantic. Interment will follow in the Haddamn Center Burial Association Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home this evening, 7-9 p.m.

Contributions may be made, in her memory, to the Lyme Services Bureau, Lyme Street, Old Lyme 06371. ARNONE. Mathew Arnone, 79, of 212 Pearl Enfield, died Monday (Dec. 14) at St. Francis Hospital and Medical Center.

He was born in Enfield and was.a lifelong resident. He was formerly employed by the former Bigelow Sanford Carpet Enfield, and was retired from Pratt Whitney Aircraft, East Hartford, in 1960. Mr. Arnone was a member of St. Patrick's Church and was Past Grand Knight.

Arnone was also a former member of St. Patrick's Parish Council and served as an usher at the church for many years. He was a member of the former St. Calogero Society. He is survived by his wife, Carmela V.

C. Alan Darryl Blassingame, 37, of 57 Coolidge Hartford, departed this life Saturday (Dec. 12) at St. Francis Hospital and Medical Center. He was a lifelong resident of Hartford and was a graduate of Hartford Public High School, class of 1968, and the Community Renewal Team Computer, Technical Training Program.

Henry of Vernon; his paternal grandmother, Mrs. Patti Blassingame of Detroit, a longtime friend, Carolyn Lollar of Hartford; five nieces and nephews and six grandnieces and grandnephews; and many other relatives and friends. Fuqua Funeral Chapel, 2087 Main Hartford. CHAMBERS. Mary Theresa Chambers, 34, died Monday (Dec. 14) at home after a long illness. She was a graduate of South Catholic High School and the University of Connecticut.

Prior to her illness, she was a registered nurse with the Visiting Nurse and Home Care Association of Hartford. She is survived by her parents, Martin and Cecelia (O'Connor) Chambers of West Hartford; her sister, Anne Chambers of New Hartford; and three brothers, Martin of East Hampton, Denis Chambers of Hartford and John Chambers of Westfield. CALLOWAY. Phillip Calloway, 71; son of the late Tarl and Sarah Calloway, of 25 Ellis Hartford, died Sunday (Dec, 13) at Greenwood Convalescent Home. He was born in Americus, and had lived in Hartford for the last 36 years. was employed at Philbrick, Booth Spencer, retiring in 1975. Mr.

Calloway is survived by his wife, Clidie (Baker) Calloway; three sons, Clyde J. Brinson of New Britain, Phillip Calloway Jr. of Hartford and Charles Calloway Americus, five daughters, Odessa Dixon, Louise Williams, Sarah R. Calloway, Vera M. Calloway and Jeanette Lee, all of Hartford; a sister and brother-in-law, Bertha and Walter Sneed in Georgia; a devoted nephew, Leonard of Bloomfield; 23 grandchildren, 27 great-grandchildren and a great-great-grandson; several nieces, nephews and a host of relatives and friends.

Funeral service will be Thursday, 1 p.m., at Welcome Baptist Church, 205 Bellevue Hartford, with burial in Northwood Cemetery, Wilson. Edmund Cheerier, 69, of 35 Mack Windsor, formerly 1 of Bloomfield, died Sunday (Dec. 13) at Mount Sinai Hospital. Born in Island Pond, he lived in Bloomfield most of his life, moving to Windsor two years ago. He had been employed by Stebbens Autobody of West Hartford for over 25 years, retiring in 1984. He leaves his wife, Irene (Ouellette) Cheverier; four sons, Richard of Oxenhill; Adelord, Robert and Raymond, all of Windsor; three daughters, Shirley Camerato of Bloomfield, Janice Preneta of Rocky Hill and Bernice Cheverler of Hartford; a brother, Adelord Cheverier of Windsor; two sisters, Irene Akers of Toledo, Ohio, and Margaret Crawls of Port Charlotte, a half-sister, Helen of New Britain; and 16 grandchildren.

He was predeceased by a son, Norman, and a daughter, Elaine. The funeral will be Wednesday, 9:15 a.m., from the Carmon Funeral Home, 6 Poquonock Windsor, with a mass of Christian burial, 10 in St. Gertrude's Church, Windsor. Burial will be in Mount St. Benedict Cemetery.

Jack Cooney, 60, of 23 Primrose Lane, Kensington, died unexpectedly Sunday (Dec. 13) at New Britain General Hospital. He was a lifelong Berlin resident and was the son of the late Dominic and Mary Ellen (Hurley) Cooney.

He was World War I1 Navy veteran, having served in the Pacific Theatre, and was a 41 year employee of the New Britain Machine Co. where he was an engineer. He was also a member of St. Paul's Church, the Msgr. Thomas L.

Greylish Council Knights of Columbus and the Italian Independent Political Club. Mr. Cooney attended local schools, the Porter School of Design and Central Connecticut State College. He was an outstanding baseball pitcher at Berlin High School. He is survived by his wife, Betty (Fusaro) Cooney; two sons, Kevin E.

Cooney of New Britain and Craig A. Cooney of Berlin; a daughter, Mrs. Colleen Wagoner of Darien; a brother, Edmund H. Cooney of Berlin; two sisters, Mrs. Kathleen Penta of New Britain and Mrs.

Audrey Dokas of Kensington; three grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. He predeceased in 1969 by his sister, Elizabeth King. Funeral service will be Wednesday, 9:15 a.m., at the Francis Funeral Home, 96 Main Kensington, followed by a mass, 10 a.m., in St. Paul's Church, Kensington. Calling hours are today, 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. JACOBSON. Ralph S. Jacobson, 67, of 300 Cold Spring Road, Rocky Hill, died Dec. 14, 1987.

He was born in Boston, and had lived in the Hartford area for more than 60 years. He was formerly employed as a court reporter at the U.S. Submarine Base, Groton, for 20 years after which he was employed as a production expeditor for the Stanley Works until his retirement. He was an Army veteran of World War Il and his grandfather was a Civil War veteran. He leaves two sisters, Mrs.

Arthur (Gladys) Naviasky of Bloomfield and Dr. Ethel B. Jacobson of New York City: two nephews; a niece, and a grandniece. The funeral service will be Thursday, 11 a.m., In the chapel of the Weinstein Mortuary, 640 Farmington Ave. Interment: John Hay Memorial Park.

Thomas A. Crowley, husband of Elsie (Swanson) Crowley, of Hartford, died Monday (Dec. 14). He was born in Lawrence, son of the late Thomas and Elizabeth (Madden) Crowley, and had lived in Hartford for most of his life. Prior to his retirement he was employed as the chief building inspector for the City of Hartford for 33 years.

Besides his wife, Mr. Crowley leaves three sisters, Mrs. Florence Wise of Wethersfield, Mrs. Genevieve Flanagan of Enfield and Miss Gertrude Crowley of Newington; 11 nieces and nephews. Funeral will be Wednesday, 9:15 a.m., from the Funeral Home, 96 Webster Hartford, followed by a mass of Christian burial, 10a.m., in St.

Augustine's Church, 10 Campfield Hartford. Private burial will be in Mount St. Benedict. Cemetery, Bloomfield. Friends may call at the funeral home today, 4-7 p.m.

FRAY. Herbert C. Fray died Monday (Dec. 14) at the Rocky Hill Veterans Home and Hospital. He was born in Oxford.

He is survived by a daughter, Maria T. Rogerson of Portland. Funeral service will be Thursday, 8 a.m., at the Rocky Hill Veterans Home and Hospital Catholic Chapel, where a mass of Christian burial will be held. Burlal will be in Col. R.

Gates Cemetery. Calling hours are Wednesday, 7-9 p.m., at the Rose HIll Funeral Home, 580 Elm Rocky Hill. GILLETTE. Evelyn (Norris) Gillette, 81, of West Mountain Road, West Simsbury, wife of Norman Gillette died Saturday (Dec. 12, 1987) at St.

Francis Hospital and Medical Center. She was born May 31, 1906, in Plimpton, and had lived in West Simsbury for 42 years. She was a member of the Ruth Willys Chapter of the DAR, Hartford, the Simsbury Garden Club and the Connecticut Horticultural Society. Besides her husband, she is survived by a son, Norman Gillette Jr. of West Simsbury; and a sister, Marian Bradell of Belleview, Fla.

Funeral service will be Wednesday, 10 a.m., at the Vincent Funeral Home, 880 Hopmeadow Simsbury, with the Rev. V. Don Haas officiating. Burial will be in Center Cemetery, Simsbury. There will be no calling hours.

HARDEN. Jessie (Halliday) Hard78, of Wethersfield, died Sunday (Dec. 13) in in West Hartford. She was born Hartford and had worked at the Hartford Insurance Group as a private secretary for over 44 years, retiring in 1971. She is survived by several cousins and a niece.

She was the widow of Antonio Lauria, who died in 1971. She was born in Potenza, Italy, and had been a resident of New Britain the last 64 years. She was a member of St. Andrew's Church. Survivors include two daughters, Juliet Lauria and Angie Settembrino, both of New Britain; three grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.

Funeral service will be Wednesday, 7:45 a.m., from the Donald D. Sagarino Funeral Home, 109 North New Britain, and 8:45 a.m., from St. Andrew's Church. Burial will be in St. Mary's Cemetery, New Britain.

Pierson, 89, of 709 New Britain Hartford, formerly of Old Saybrook, where she lived for 23 years, wife of Edward Clifford Pierson, died Sunday (Dec. 13) at Avery Heights Convalescent Home, Hartford, after a short illness. She was born in Danbury, April 18, 1898, daughter of late Franklin and Edith (Marsh) Porter. Mrs. Pierson was a retired school teacher for the Watertown school system.

Besides her husband, she leaves a son, Alfred W. Pierson of Old Saybrook; and a grandchild. Funeral service will be held Wednesday, 11 a.m., in the Swan Funeral Home, 1224 Boston Post Road, Old Saybrook. Fox executive, died Dec. 11 at Springfield Vermont Hospital, after a brief illness. He Simsbury resident for many years. He was a 1937 graduate college of Dartmouth College. He was a selectman In Cavendish, Vt.

for several years. He was executive director of the Fletcher Farm Foundation, Ludlow, a director of the Black River Health Center, and a director of the Southeastern Vermont Mental Health Association. Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Dorothy J. Newburger of Cavendish, sister, Isabelle Howell of Harrison, N.Y.; a niece and two great-nieces.

His first marriage to Hanna Lavitt ended in divorce, Funeral service will be private. The family suggests memorial contributions in lieu of flowers be made to the Dartmouth College Alumni Fund, or Cavendish Baptist Church. O'ROURKE. John Joseph 'O'Rourke, husband of Doris (Scaglia) O'Rourke, of 133 Hubbard Glastonbury, died Sunday (Dec. 13) at St.

Francis Hospital and Medical Center. He was born in Hartford, son of the late Charles and Mary (Lavin)' O'Rourke, and was educated in New York, N.Y. He was a graduate of East Hartford High School, Central Connecticut State University and the University of Hartford. Mr. O'Rourke had been a teacher in the Hartford and Bolton school systems and was a realtor and owner of Jesdor Realty and O'Rourke Realty, Glastonbury, for over 20 years.

He was also employed as a state official at Jai Alai for special revenue services in Connecticut. He also served on the staff of Congresswoman, Barbara B. Kennelly, for several years, and was a deputy sheriff in Hartford County. He had also been a land developer in Coventry and Glastonbury where he was responsible for initiating three major building projects. Mr.

O'Rourke was a member of the Democratic Town Committee and was chairman of District 7, Glastonbury. He had served on the Citizens Advisory Council, the Personal Appeals Board, the Town Planning and Zoning Commission, on which he served as chairman, and was an Army veteran of World War II. He was also a member of the IrishAmerican Home Society with a deep interest in Ireland which he often visited. He was a former member of the Service Club of Glastonbury and had an intense interest in aiding the homeless. Mr.

O'Rourke was a devout communicant of St. Paul's Church, Glastonbury, and Blessed Sacrament Church, East Hartford. Besides his wife, he leaves three sons, Shaun O'Rourke, Eugene O'Rourke and James O'Rourke, all of Glastonbury; a sister, Anne Coleman of West Hartford; several nieces and nephews; and many relatives in Ireland. He was predeceased by brother, Patrick O'Rourke, and two sisters, Margaret Murphy and Marion Thibodeau. Funeral will be Thursday, 10:15 a.m., at the Farley-Sullivan Funeral Home, 50 Naubuc Glastonbury, followed by a mass of Christian burial, 11 a.m., in St.

Paul's Church, Main Street, Glastonbury. Burial will be in Green Cemetery, Glastonbury. PETERS. Lillian (Cary) Peters, 88, of East Hartford, widow of Harry J. Peters, died Monday (Dec. 14). She was born in Chicago, had resided in the Hartford area for many years.

Prior to her retirement she was employed by Sage-Allen Co. in the Hartford and East Hartford stores. She leaves two daughters, Mrs. Rosemary Parone of West Hartford and Barbara Dionne of Saratoga, two sisters, Marjorie Cooper of Falmouth, and Virginia Champion in Massachusetts; and six grandchildren. Funeral service will be Wednesday, at the Farley-Sullivan Funeral Home, 96 Webster Hartford.

Born in Manhattan, N.Y., she Is survived by a son, Angel Lee Ortiz Ill, her mother, Minerva Fernandez, a sister, Minerva Santiago, niece, Minerva Martinez, and a close friend, Alejandro Anaury, all of Hartford. Funeral service will be Wednesday, 8 a.m., at the De Leon Funeral Home, 104 Main Hartford, followed by a mass of Christian burial, 9 a.m., in Sacred Heart Church. She was born In New Britain and had lived in Hartford for 35 years, moving to New Britain where she had resided for 26 years. She then lived in Kensington for the last eight years. She attended Sacred Heart School, New Britain, and Hartford Public High School. With her husband, Mrs. Puskarz was a partner in the Regal Package Store, New Britain, for 18 years, retiring in 1967.

She was a member of Holy Cross Church, the Ladies Guild of the church and the Polish Womens Alliance Group 280. Besides her husband, she leaves a son and daughter-in-law, Richard and Vernie Puskarz of Farmington; a daughter, Lorraine L. Powers of New Britain; four grandchildren, Linda Powers and Laurene Powers, both of New Britain, and two granddaughters in New York. Funeral service will be Thursday, 9:15 a.m., from the Newington Memorial Funeral Home, 20 Bonair Newington, followed by a mass of Christian burial, 10 a.m., in Holy Cross Church, New Britaln. Burial will be in Sacred Heart Cemetery.

He was the husband of Shirley (Flavell) Riley, Born in West Haven, May 4, 1913, he had been a Bolton resident for 20 years. He had been employed at Pratt Whitney Aircraft for more than 30 years until he retired in 1976. He was a past president of the Aircraft Club and was a member of the Masonic Lodge of Glastonbury. Besides his wife, he is survived by a son, John F. Riley of East Hampton; two daughters, Mrs.

Charles (Patricia) Foley of Glastonbury and Mrs. Edward (Suellen) Stevens of South Windsor; a stepdaughter, Mrs. James (Cheryl) Benoit of Vernon; a brother, Peter F. Riley of New Fairfield; four granddaughters; three grandsons; several nieces and nephews. The funeral will be Wednesday, 11 a.m., in St.

SAUER. R. Harold Sauer, 92, of 6 South Road, Enfield, died Sunday (Dec. 13) at St. Francis Hospital and Medical Center.

He was born in Brooklyn, N.Y., and had lived in Enfield the last 58 years. He was employed as a master rug designer at the former Bigelow Sanford Carpet Co. for over 40 years, retiring in 1966. He was a member of the Queensboro Lodge No. 892 and was an Army veteran of World War I.

He is survived by two sons, Robert H. Saver of Framingham, and Donald Saver of Harwinton; three daughters, Mrs. Marjorie Smyth of Enfield, Mrs. Theron (Gladys) Hardy of Suffield and Mrs. John (Joan) of Agawam, 16 grandchildren, and seven greatgrandchildren.

Lydia (Vanderbeck) Wade, 93, of 220 Preston Windsor, widow of David Wade, died Monday (Dec. 14) at St. Francis Hospital and Medical Center. Born in Brooklyn, N.Y., she had lived in Windsor since 1923. She was a member of the First Church In Windsor, Congregational; the Church Women's Club, the Windsor Historical Society, and had been active with the Girl Scouts.

She is survived by a son, Robert Wade of Bloomfield; a daughter, Lucile Wade of Windsor; a granddaughter, Alison Wade; and three great-grandchildren. John Stewart Rankin Jr. 76, of Route 89, Ashford, died Saturday (Dec.

12) at John Dempsey Hospital, Farmington. He was born Sept. 27, 1911, in Manchester, N.H., and had resided in Ashford for many years. He received his BA degree from Wesleyan University, graduating class of 1933, his MA degree also from Wesleyan in 1934 and his PhD Duke Unlversity In 1936. Prof.

Rankin taught at Amherst and the University of Washington prior to coming to the University of Connecticut in 1943 where he taught for 33 years. He was founder and first director of the University of Connecticut Marine Research Lab at Noank. At the Marine Biological Laboratory at Woods Hole he served as Instructor, resident summer naturalist and was a member of the Board of Trustees. Prof. Rankin was a former direc-: tor of the Marine Science Program, Sea Education Association (S.E.A.) at Woods Hole.

was also program director in environmental biology at the National Sclence Foundation, Washington D.C., and was biology advisor at the College the Virgin Islands at St. Thomas. Prof. Rankin served the State of Connecticut as chairman of the Shellfish Commission and was chairman of the Connecticut Coastal Area Management Advisory Board. He was active in many professional societies, Including chairman of the Division of Invertebrate Zoology of the American Society of Zoologists.

His research Interests included estuarine ecology, mapping of the Connecticut coastal wetlands and ecology of the Benthic Marine Invertebrates, including Antartic Weddell Sea organisms. He is survived by his wife, Julia (Smith) Rankin; a daughter, Joan R. Berman of Trinidad, a niece, Susan Mimnaugh of Lafayette, N.J.; and a nephew, Frederic C. Swan of Barry, Vt. A memorial service will be Friday, 1:30 p.m., at the Storrs Congregational Church.

SHERMAN. Beverly P. Sherman, 56, of 292 Pequot New London, died Dec. 11 at her home. She was born March 22, 1931, in Germantown, the daughter of Lloyd and Helen (Grove) Partridge.

She was married to H. Sherman, Sept. 1, 1951, in Pawtucket, R.I. Mrs. Sherman was a 1952 graduate of Brown University.

She received her master's degree from University of Rhode Island in 1975 and was a member of Phi Bata Kappa. She was a librarian, last working for the Waterford Board of Education at Lane Junior High School in 1979. Besides her husband, she is survived by two daughters, Brett Sherman of Brooklyn, N. and Kitt Lee of Benicia Callf. A memorial service will be Friday (Dec.

18, 1987), 11 a.m., at the All Souls Unitarian Universalist Church, 60 Huntington New London. Burial will be private. There are no calling hours.
