Harbour. The campaign will open iu full activity this week. Among the out-of-town speakers expected are Senator Fryo of Maine, the Hon. Warner Miller of New York, Congress-man Uoutolle of Mulne, Mahlon Chance of New York, and from this state Senators Flats and llawloy, Congressmen Sitnomla and Russell, tbo Hon. J.

M. Hubbard of Mkl-dletuwn, Joseph Barbour of Hartford-aml ethers. The Danbury democrats have renominated J. Howard Taylor for judgo of probate. The prohibition caucus to nominate senator and representatives Hartford will be held this evening at 8 o'clock.

The democrats of the Twentieth Senatorial District on Saturday nominated Charles P. Lymun of Washington. Mr. Lyman was in the Legislature iu 1884. He live in New I'restou and was Cleveland's "postmaster there.

Captain Patrick O'Farrell, formerly of this city, made a spoech at a republican meeting in Wilmington, not long ago, and it took so immensely that he was called on to return and address another meeting within a few days. Mr. J. M. Hubbard of Middlotown the republican candidate for Congress.has forced Congressman Willcox to take the stump iu a joint debate, which will come off on Friday at Middlotown.

Mr. Hubbard is a sharp speaker and keeu mau, and it is believed that he will worry Mr. Willcox not a little. Lawyer J. P.

Healy of Windsor Locks and Hartford is receiving the congratulations of his friends ou the way he "gets there" with bis political projects. He led the forces of Mr. Preston in the democratic county convention and secured his nomination as sheriff, knocking out the whole Hartford contingent, who thought they had everything solid for George W. Fowler. Then he worked up 'Judge White's boom for the probate position and, though he couldn't make it unanimous, he, like the Essex band, "done tbe best he could." His success as a hustler is manifest and his friends think that if be had been made chairman of the democratic state central committee it would have been a livelier campaign.

THE RUSSELlr-WKLLS DEBATE. The first debate between Charles A. Russell and David A. Wells will be held at Wil-limantic on Thursday night of this week, Ootobor33. Sixth District.

THE HOS. K. J. DOOLITTLE RENOMINATED. The republicans of tbe Sixth District met Saturday in New Uavea and nominated the Hon.

Edgar J. Doolittle of Meriden. Mr. Doolittle was elected in 1880 and made an excellent senator. Id the last Legislature the Sixth District was represented by Senator Morse (dem).

If Mr. Morse is put up again, and, if the advocate who spoke and exercised in his behalf at the recent state convention here will take the stump for him, then Mr. Doolittle ought to have a walk over. Senatorial Conventions. REPUBLICAN.

Lludxley, secretary of the state board of health, reports that the total deaths iu the state during last month (Mansfield not reporting) were an average death rata of lo.3 per thousand of population. Three hundred of these wore of children under five years of nge, being S0.8 per cent, of the total mortality. The deaths in publics Institutions were: Bridgeport 8, Hartford VI, Middlotown 6, New Haven lJ. These nre deducted from the the total mortality of those towns in estimating the death rates. The following towns reported no deaths in September: Ashford, Uencon Falls.

Berlin. Bethany, IiloomUeld, Chaplin, Chester, Clinton, Columbia, Coventry, Durham, Knston, East Haven, East Windsor. Franklin, Hampton, Hartlaml, Hnrwinton, Killing-worth, Lodyard, Litchfield, Middlebury, Morris, New Fairfield, Newiugton, North Branford, North Ktonington, Old Lyme, Prospect, Scotland, Tolland, Warren, West-brook and Wolcatt 34. One hundred and thirty-seven smaller towns under 5,000 each aggregated 3:23 deaths, a death rate of III.

The highest death rate was in 1'utnam, 25.8. Throughout the state most victims died from diseases of the nervous system 121, and the other most prevalent causes of death were: Diphtheria and croup, 37; typhoid fever, 40; diarrhoea, HO (104 under 5 years of age); consumption, lift): heart disease, 91; accidents and violence, 4.i; still born, 58. The deaths last week were 274 less than in August, and 34 less than iu September of last year, and 18 more than the average mortality In (September for the live years preceding. The deaths from zymotio disease were 255, being 26 3 per cent, of the total mortality against per cent, in August The following infectious diseases were ro ported as occurring in the towns mentioned: Measles Stamford; no deaths. Bcarlet Fever Ansonia, Uroton, Nauga- tuck, New Haven, Norwalk, Stamford one death.

Cerebro-Bpinal Fever Four deaths. Diphtheria and Croup-Tbirty-seven deaths. Typhoid Fever Forty-six eeaths. Diphtheria and croup are reported from more towns than in August, and the mortality has considerably increased. A sudden outbreak of diphtheria of severe character occurred at Taftville, a suburb of Norwich.

Seven or more deaths have resulted. It was confined to the children of the French Canadian residents, employed in the Fonemah mills. The sanitary condition of their homes was far from satisfactory, especially in regard to the disposal of sewage and the probable pollution of the wells. The board of health of Norwich being notified took immediate action, and by prompt and energetic measures the progress of the disease has been arrested. Typhoid fever has increased, both in the extent of its prevalence and in the resulting mortality.

The increased prevalence is general throughout the state. There were forty-six deaths from the disease as against thirty-two in August. Diarrhoeal diseases have greatly diminished, the reported mortality being only a little more than one-third of that in August Acute diseases of the lungs have been more fatal. Secretary Lindsley calls attention to the mistake of many towns in electing at the last town election both a health officer and a health committee. Under the law a health officer or a health committee (not both) should be annually elected in each town.
