Bushnell, Cornelius Scranton, builder of the Monitor, has a worthy place among these biographies. Bushnell, Ericsson Foote, of New Tork (son of the above). Is widely known as an oratorio and operatic singer, and has rilled more oratorio engagements the last Seven years than any other American basso.

Chase, George Lewis, born in 1828, became a fire insurance agent at 19 and worked his way up in the business till to-day he is president of the renowned Hartford Fire Insurance Company. Five times he has been president of the Congregational Club. Carpenter, Ellsha, was born In Ash-ford in 1824 and died in Hartiford in 1S97. He left a fine record as Judge of the superior and supreme courts. Dunham, Austin Cornelius, Hartford, Tale '54, touches the mercantile and philanthropic life of the state at many points.

He Is president and director of a long list of manufacturing and insurance conjpanles. One concern, the Dunham Hosiery, bears his name. Dunbar, Edward Butler, is a member of the firm of Dunbar Brothers of Bristol, turning out millions of fine springs a year. He has served four terms in the Legislature. Frisbie, Edward Clarence, of the widely known wholesale drug house of School '81, is a leading patent lawyer in New York.

Roberts, Charles has held many offices in East Hartford, including thost of selectman uud ivpivse illative. He Is prosecuting attorney. Rudd, William Beanhl.e, Lakeville, a lieutenant in the Ninety -eighth New York In the war, was aid on Uovernor liigelow's and quartermaster-general on Governor Kulkeley's staff. Trubee Bridgeport. Terry, Charles Appleton, an expert patent lawyer of New Tork, is a son of the J. P. Taylor, a native of Enfield, and formerly lived in Lyme. Taylor, Henry Augustus, has preserved the family name in Milford by the Mary Taylor Memorial Chuch and the Taylor Library.

He is a railroad constructor of national repute. Tiley, Curtis Bates, New Haven, a native of East Haddam, is a dentist with a select patronage. He was graduated at the Philadelphia Dental College in 'S6. Trumbull, James Hammond, the distinguished Hartford savant, author and librarian, was born in 1821 and died August 5, 1897. His remarkable life is well described in this book.

Waldo, George Curtis, learned editor of the "Bridgeport Standard," was born In Lyme in 1837, was graduated at Tufts in '60 and became connected with the "Standard" in 1867. He is also shell fish commissioner. Woodruff, George Catlln, is the editor and proprietor of the "Litchfield Enquirer." He is aniherst, '85, and Uuion Theological Seminary, '88. In 1894 he resigned from the ministry and bought the "Enquirer," which he has raised to a high standard. Wadsworth, Adrian Rowe, Tale, S.

S. '80, representative from Farming-ton, Is civil engineer and farmer, has held many offices and is president of the State Dairymen's Association, a thoroughgoing man of affairs. Andrews, Charles Sperry, Danbury, is president of the Danbury Hardware Company, which has made one of this the most substantial concerns in the state. He has a large department store. He was mayor in '93-95.

Beckwith, Charles Fenner, Is sole proprietor of the business conducted under the style of the Beckwith Card Company, Stafford Springs, the only concern of its kind in the state. Brown, Delos Daniels, was a captain in the Twenty-first C. V. He has been representative and county commissioner and is proprietor of the popular Lake View House, East Hampton. Browne, John Dean, Is president of the Connecticut Fire Insurance Company, Hartford, and is interested in several other organizations.

For ten years he was engaged in manufacturing in the West, always successful. Bacon, Leonard Woolsey, Norwich, was graduated at Tale in '50, at the Andover Theological Seminary and at Tale Medical School. He has traveled extensively and has written many works. His last pastorate was in Phil adelphia. Bruggerhof.

Frederick William, president of J. M. Thorburn Company, New Tork, lives in Noroton and has been representative and senator. Brewster, Benjamin, of New Tork, a promoter of the Standard Oil Comnanv. was born in Norwich, He died last August.

Dickerman, Watson Bradley, president of the New York Stock Exchange, was born In Mount Carmel. Danaher, Cornelius Joseph, a graduate of the Yale Law School, '93, is a rising young attorney of Merlden. Ellsworth, Lemuel Stoughton, manufacturer, Simsbury, a man of special commercial ability, is a partner of En-Eign, Bickford Simsbury.

Eggleston, Arthur is the success, ful state's attorney of Hartford county. He was born in Enfield and was graduated from Williams In '64. He has been judge of the police court and county treasurer, and whatever he undertakes he does well. Earle, William Henry, one of the best known of New York hotel proprietors, was born In Hartford in 1837. Ellsbree, George Lyman, prominent druggist and manufacturer, Meriden, hfis been councilman and first selectman. Goodwin, Ralph Schuyler, Thomaston. for thirty years a leading Litchfield county doctor, is president of State Medical Society. Gross, Charles Edward, stands In the front rank, not only among lawyers but as a business man In general.

Goodrich, Charles has been the capable manager of the Hartford New Tork Transportation Company, Hartford, for twenty years. His whole attention is devoted to marine commerce. Howe, Harmon- George, Hartford, graduate of the College of Physicians and Surgeons, '75, has extensive experience and enjoys a large practice. He has a valuable art collection.

Hunter, John Lathrop, Wlllimantic, Bowdoin '55. has been town and bor ough attorney and is now state's at torney. He is an influential member oi the democratic jtate central committee. Morgan. John Pierpont, head of the banking house of J.

P. Morgan New Tork, and the greatest financier in the United States, was born in Hartford in 1837. The sketch describes his business career and his many deeds of charity. Pratt. Francis Ashbury, served his timg as a machinist and came here in '52.

He and his life-long associate, Amos Whitney, established their present famous concern, Pratt Whitney, in 1860. Skllton, Dewltt Clinton, is the presi dent of the Phoenix Insurance Company, Hartford. He started as clerk in the Hartford Fire In 1861. He was first lieutenant in the Twenty-second C. V.

In the war. Townsend, James Mulford, a pros perous New Tork lawyer. Tale, '74, was born In New Haven in 1852. Troup, Alexander, has long been a conspicuous figure In Connecticut politics and journalism. As editor of the New Haven union," which he rounded In 1871, he Is an exponent of the silver doctrine.

He has been represen tative and revenue collector. Thacher, Thomas Anthony, Tale, '35, tutor and professor at Tale till his death In '86, and his son, Thomas Thacher, Tale, '71, one of New Tork's foremost lawyers, both are subjects of interest ing sketches here. Wilcox, Dennis Colburn, established the New Tork branch of the Meriden Britannia Company in '63. He died in 1886. Webb, Charles Hathaway, of the firm of Dunham, Buckley New Tork, and president of the National Accident Society, was born in Windsor Locks in 1842.

Wetherbee, Gardner, the well-known hotel man of New Tork city, has his summer home at Fairfield. Mead, Benjamin Penfleld, New Canaan, born in Bridgeport in 1847, a successful merchant, has never been defeated In the twenty times he has been candidate for office. He has been representative and senator and is serving his second term as comptroller of the state. Mallory. Charles, the vice-president of New Tork Texas Steamship Company, New Tork, was born in Mystic in 1844.

Mason, Jarvls King, 'Tale '55, Harvard Medical School '61 (a teacher meanwhile), has practiced with marked success rn Suffield since 1861 and is president of the County Medical Society. McQuald, William Adolph, of the law firm of Sackett, Bacon McQuald, New Tork. Tale '89 (valedictorian), Law School '92, spent his early life in New Haven. Nichols, James, born in Easton in 1830, spent spare hours studying law and for years was a member of the Hartford bar, Judge of probate In '61-64. In '67 he went Into insurance and in '87 was chosen to his present position, president of the National Fire Insurance Company.

Osgood, Hugh Henry, head of the drug firm of Lee Osgood, Norwich, for over thirty years, was mayor of that town ten years. He was on Governor Buckingham's staff. Porter, George Loring, Brown '59, Jefferson Medical College, '62, has a remarkable record as war surgeon and has practiced In Bridgeport since retiring from the army in '68. Hoyt, entered the employ of the Stanley Works, New Britain, in '65 and in '87 became director and secretary. He is president of the Burritt Savings Bank and was mayor in '90. BartletU John Pomeroy, '78, Law of the Berkeley Divinity School, was born In Old Deerfield August 30, 1817, and has a biography that is history. Weed, John, is another Noroton man who has made his mark In New Tork as a merchant, member of Weed Brothers, wholesale dry goods. Warner.

Donald Tlcknor. Salisbury, (where he was born In 1850), M. Trinity College, Is a lawyer conspicuous for his talents. He has been postmaster, judge of probate, senator twice and Is state's attorney. He is a stalwart republican.

Allen, Charles Dexter, born In Windsor Locks in 1865, became clerk in the Society for Savings, Hartford, in '82 and remains with the institution. He Is literary editor of the "Post" and a collector of and writer on book plates. Brlnsmade, William Gold, Harvard, '81, established the Ridge Preparatory School for Boys, Washington, in 1894 and already it is a well known institution of learning. Brlnsmade, John Chapln, Harvard, '74, has been principal since '81 of the gunnery in Washington, of which his father-in-law, the late F. W.

Gunn.was so long the head. It Is one of New England's famous schools. Robbins.the noted banker and philanthropist of Norfolk, who died in 1895, left a name that will be preserved In the annals of the state. Incidentally, he was several times representative and was comptroller In '66, resigning because of conscientious scruples. Benton, Hubert Elmore, born in Morris In 1849, Tale Law School, '75, was editor of the "New Haven Palladium" '80-85, after which he practised law in New Haven.

He was chairman of the republican state central committee '90- 95, resigning when chosen Bchool fundri commissioner. Chandler, Joseph William, born In England in 1837. has been Judge of the borough court of Stafford Springs since it was established in '89 and is postmaster there, by President Harrison's appointment. Curtlss, James Anson, born in Cheshire, established the Old Original Cash Grocery in Meriden, which has been successful from the start, owns several fine houses and Is president of the Converse Publishing Company. He is a self-made, prosperous business man.

Deming, Lucius Parmenius, a Massachusetts man by birth, after a varied career Including experience as a sailing master, was graduated at the Tule Law School in '77 and has won prominence in his profession. For six years he was Judge of the New Haven court of common pleas. Fuller, Horace Smith, a native of Suffield, Amherst '58, College of Physicians and Surgeons '65, has been medical examiner in Hartford since '84. He was surgeon-general on Governor Andrews's staff. Fitzmaurke, Walter, an all-round newspaper man, is editor and proprietor of the "New London Morning Telegraph," of which he was one of the founders in 1885.

All his life has been spent in that town. He has been major on the brigade staff and president of the C. T. A. U.

of the state. Hall, Stephen born In 1849. manager of Shoninger's piano business in Norwich, has been senator and is postmaster in Norwich. He is a sturdy gold democrat and very popular. Heublein, Gilbert Hartford, born In Germany in 1849, is head of the firm of G.

F. Heublein Brother, importers of wlnesf1 who have a celebrated cafe and one of the best equipped hotels in New England. Their bottled goods have given them a reputation all over the country. Maltby, Wilburt Stevens, a Birmingham boy, made his fame around the world as a bicyclist. He is now of the Maltby-Henley Company, New Tork, agents of the Keating wheel.

May, Calvin Sloane, born in Nauga-tuck, Tate Medical School '73, has a select clientele as a physician in New Tork. Morgan, James born in Haddam Neck in 1839, formerly superintendent business. Pearne, Wesley Ulysses, Is Judge of the city court of Middletown. a lawyer of wide practice. He is also captain of Company Second C.

N. G. and a prominent man In fraternities. He was graduated at Wesleyan, '74. Parker, Joseph, born In Morris, es tablished the West Rock Paper Mill In New Haven and was ths first manufacturer of American blotting paper.

Russell, Charles of Haddam and New York, president of the Connecticut Granite Company and promoter of District Messenger Companies in London and Paris, was consul-general at Liverpool under Cleveland's appointment. Rogers, Nathaniel Burton, Is president of the Rogers Silver Piatt? Company, Danbury. He was a drummer boy In the Seventh C. V. He is chairman of the republican town committee.

Root, George Wells, commission merchant, of Hartford and New York City, was born In Augusta, N. Y. in 1826, and died In Hartford, March 21, 1897. Smith, Addison, inventor, manufacturer and banker, was born in Suffield, in 1816, and died In New York in 1893. Simmons, Willard Nelson, received the degree of M.D.

from the University Vermont and Is now town physician In Tolland and specialist on Insanity. Sheedy, Bryan DeForest, LL.B., M.D., received his degrees from the- New York Medical School and from Yale and is a physician In Bridgeport. He '18 also prominent In public affairs. Thacher, James Klngsley, born in New Haven, Yale '68, Medical School '79, was a professor of the latter school and a scientific investigator. He died In 1891.

Tenney, Arthur John, Tale S. S. S. '77, Medical School '85, Is a very successful practitioner In Branford. Warner, Charles Dudley, born In Plalnfleld, in 1829, was graduated at Hamilton College In '51.

His career as a Journalist, a traveler, an author and an editor of "Harper's Magazine" is outlined In this book. Wade, Henry Lawton, had early training In manufacturing and general business. Becoming secretary of the Waterbury Clock Company, he advanced steadily till In '85 he was made president and treasurer, the office he now holds. Whlton, Francis Henry, Dartmouth Medical College '71, has a skillful practitioner in Manchester since '73. An ardent republican and always interested In public affairs.

He has been representative twice Williams, Jams Baker, born In 1818, had early training on the farm and as a drug clerk. By patient study he learned how to make a perfect shaving soap and "Williams's Genuine Tankee Soap" has carried his name over the world. The Joint stock company, J. B. Williams Company, was formed In Glastonbury In '85 with him as president.

He is also president of the Williams Brothers Manufacturing Company. Williams, Charles Fish, has been in the drug business in New London and Ansonla, In '78 ho went to Thomaston where the firm of C. F. Williams Son to-day has a solid reputation. Whlton, David Erskine, has built a large business in manufacturing mechanical speciaUies, beginning in West Stafford and moving to New London in 66.

Welch, Archibald Hyfle, second vice-president of the- New Tork Life Insurance Company, -was torn tn MansfieluV and was once a clerk la tlrhl city, Winchell, Alverd Weslsyfta T7. College, of Physicians and Surgeon '63, Is a New Haven doctor known throughout the etate. Card, Albert Miller, with a law offlcs in New Tork, is president ot the village of Sharon and connected with several Industrial concerns. Jennings, Abraham Gould, founder of the lace industry in this country, was born in Fairfield in 182L Layton, Jacob is cashier of the City National bank, and a well-known education. He was an original member of the Ansonla O.

C. Company and in '95 became secretary of the H. O. C. Company, the largest eyelet mill In the world.

Kellogg, John Prescott, born In Wat erbury In 18(10, was graduated at Yale In "82, Law School, '84. Ills positions of trust in Waterbury have been many and Important. He Is now city attor ney and assistant state's attorney. Kendrtck, Greene, born in Waterbury in 1851, Yale '72, Law School '75, is a well known student of the classics as will as a lawyer of much eloquence. He has been representative and mayor and Is now town attorney.

Knight, George Henry, is the super intendent of the Connecticut School for Imbeciles, of Lakeville, In which town he was born in 1855. The school hue acquired a wide reputation as a progressive Institution. Lusk, William Thompson, New York, born In Norwich, has the degrees of A. M. and LL.

D. from Yale. He was assistant adjutant-general on General Dan Tyler's staff In the war. He has held many Important professional po sitions and has written several notable books. Lyman, Ivanhoe is general foreman of the "Consolidated" railroad shops, Falls Village, a position for which his career had well trained him.

Lane, Joseph Garret, born In Plymouth, succeeded to the large wholesale grocery and liquor business of J. W. Danforth Hartford, In '75 and has continued It ever since. Lincoln, Melvin Eugene, born in North Windham in 1H49, formerly was a large lumber merchant in Willlmantic and Jewett City and is now postmaster in Willlmantic. He has held various local offices.

Marigold, William Henry, born in Waterbury in 1858, organized the Marl-gold Printing Company in Bridgeport In 18X6. of which he Is manager. He has been mayor twice and senator twice, president pro-torn In '97. He was appointed postmaster in 1897. Apg.tr, Allen Stoddard, vice-president of Merchants' Exchange National Bank of New Tork, was born In Hartford in 1841.

Alvord, Edwin Dwight, is the treasurer and general manager of the Granite Mills Company, Vernon. He was born in Bolton in 1862. Brown, Henry Lewis, Is dhe president of the L. D. Brown's Son Company of Middletown.
